SDM To SBE United
The transition from Social Distance Management

Edward Henry, President of Edward Henry Company (EHCO), has always been fascinated with businesses regarding their infrastructure and systems used for operation. Witnessing the helplessness, hopelessness, lack of support and effects that this pandemic continued to have on businesses, regarding their ability to continue operating, and how they operated, was where the thinking process began. Questions such as; what supports are available for businesses and what support and resources are missing flooded Edwards’s mind. That’s when it finally sunk in and the journey towards helping businesses began.

Social Distance Management (SDM)

SDM was created simply because Edward Henry wanted to help businesses. In March of 2020, the message behind SDM was clear and Edward realized that a specific set of universal Safe Business Practices was needed

Since March of 2020, efforts have been dedicated to researching and collecting data to create resources, systems, and tools that would help businesses become safe space certified. Shortly after, the first draft of universal Safe Business Practices was created. A few months later, the decision was made to generate a research internship program with the purpose of obtaining research that was specific across all industries in the United States and Canada regarding standards for safe business operation

Referencing systems such as ISO, WHO’s Pandemic Phases, and Homeland Security paved the way for the development of tools and systems such as the Safe Space Advisory and the Safe Space Management Self Declaration. At this point in time, the main message behind everything created was no more lockdowns.

While in the development phase, efforts were made to meet with local politicians, and individuals in a position of leadership in hopes of creating partnerships and opportunities for collaboration. Having no luck sparked the thought of rebranding from “No More Lockdowns to “SmALL Business is Essential United.”

Helping businesses needs to be about businesses, not an opportunity for people to take a political stance. SBE United believes that ALL businesses are essential and aims to provide support, protection, and resources, through tools that assist with adhering to our core values and pillars.

Timeline of Major Events

  • March 2020: The beginning of the mission to stand by businesses and communities 
  • May 11th 2020: The first draft of Safe Space Management standards was created
  • June 11th, 2020:  The baseline for the Safe Space Advisory System was created
  • July 2020:  Research Internship Program was created
  • June 1st 2021:   Announcement of all rights and intellectual property being transferred to the non-profit organization SBE United, the resignation of Edward Henry as Managing Director, and Steve Anderson being elected as president.

A Little About Me

Steve Anderson is a Social Entrepreneur, Olympic Gold Medal Coach, and Community Champion who is from Louisville Kentucky. In addition to being the first African American to coach Olympic indoor or beach volleyball, he is also the first African American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in either discipline.

Introduced to the sport of Volleyball at a young age, he fell in love with the mechanics and skills needed to play the game. His success in this sport along with coaching, speaks to Andersons’s mindset. Anderson is a team player, strives for greatness, and possesses a champion mindset in anything he does. Anderson also founded a company called Gold Medal Coaching in 2010 which is devoted to assisting people build a champion mindset that can be applied to all aspects of life, including sports. His character, extensive networks within his community and mindset, is what makes him the ultimate fit for President of SBE United
